Cleo stood in the foyer of her apartment. She glanced around at the beige couch and chair facing her 50” TV, the adjoining kitchen which contained her tiny dining table, and down the hall to the bedrooms. Everything was quiet and in its place. And yet, she had no memory of how they got there. The last thing she recalled was at the train station after helping take those two unconscious guys into custody. Paula stood beside her in full uniform. Why was her friend all geared up, but Cleo wasn’t? They worked the same shift.

As Cleo unsuccessfully racked her brain for answers, she glanced at the clock. Two o’clock in the morning!

“Um, why am I here right now?” Paula asked, splaying her hands.

Cleo shrugged. “I honestly don't know… You don't know?”

Paula frowned; her brows pinched. “I don't remember coming here at all. How—?”

Their cell phones both took off on a tangent of chimes, slicing into their conversation. Paula checked her notifications first. “The Chief’s calling us in. Apparently, the two dudes we picked up for assault in the Chesper Tunnel yesterday escaped somehow.” She turned on her police radio, and a barrage of chatter consumed the airwaves as dispatch and numerous officers coordinated their search efforts.

Paula shared a baffled look with Cleo. “How could they have escaped?”

“No clue.” Cleo felt as if she'd just run a marathon and chased it with a triathlon. She rubbed her tired eyes, spotting her coat and purse sitting neatly on the couch. Hmm, that’s odd. She always hung her coat up in the closet. Not having enough energy to care, Cleo brushed it off. “Alright. Let's go in then, I guess. I mean, who needs sleep, right?”

Paula said dryly, “Ugh. At least we'll get overtime pay.”
